Iceland digital nomad visa: requirements & How to apply

Iceland digital nomad visa is now available for those who work remotely and the meet the requirements, the country now accept digital nomads visa applications worldwide.

What’s Iceland digital nomad visa?

Iceland’s digital nomad visa, officially called the “Iceland Remote Worker Visa,” allows remote workers and digital nomads to stay in Iceland for up to six months.

This visa is valid for 180 days, you can bring your family members to Iceland with this visa, to bring your family you will need additional income.

Iceland digital nomad visa is not renewable, when you stay for 6 months you need to leave the country, there is no possibility of visa extension for digital nomads.

Iceland digital nomad visa eligibility requirements

To be eligible for Iceland digital nomad visa there several requirements which you need to meet all of them without any exception.

Passport: to apply for Iceland digital nomad visa you need to hold a valid passport with minimum 3 months validity after your stay end in the Iceland.

Your passport must has minimum 2 blanket pages to stamp visa and entry & exit.

Third country nationality: citizens of EU, EEA, EFTA can not apply for Iceland digital nomad visa. Only third country nationals can apply for this visa.

Don’t need a visa for Iceland: this mean only those nationalities can apply for Iceland digital nomad who has visa free access to Iceland.

So if your a citizen of country which has visa free access to Schengen countries you can apply for Iceland digital nomad visa, mostly South American some East Asian countries don’t need visa for Schengen most of Asian and African need a visa for Schengen which mean they are not eligible to apply for Iceland digital nomad visa.

Don’t hold Iceland Visa: if you visited Iceland within last 1 year with long stay visa or you had residence until last 1 year you can not apply for this visa.

It’s better that you not visit Iceland for last 1 year if you want to apply for it’s digital nomad visa.

Proof of remote work: to apply for Iceland digital nomad visa you should have a proof that you are working remotely, this can be a job letter, work contract or partnership agreement.

Income requirement: to be eligible for this visa you need to earn $7.700 per month, if you bring your family members ( wife and child) you need to earn at least $10.000 per month.

The income requirement is higher than all digital nomad Visas currently in Europe and Asia .

Health insurance: a health insurance which should protect you against all possible risks for your entire stay in Iceland is required.

Police clearance certificate: you need to have a clean criminal record, you can request from local police if you are not living in your home country you need to request it from the embassy of your home country.

How to apply for Iceland digital nomad visa?

  1. Pay the Iceland Remote Work Visa Fee. You must first make the payment for the Iceland remote work visa via a bank transfer. The bank information details are listed on the Directorate of Immigration website. You have to attach the payment receipt to the rest of the required documents.
  2. Submit Your Documents and Wait for an Answer. All required documents must be submitted via postage to the Directorate of Immigration in Kópavogur. If you are already in Iceland at the time of application, you can drop them off in the lobby of the Directorate of Immigration. The processing time for a long-term visa application is approximately three to four weeks.
  3. Enter Iceland And Obtain Your Visa. Your long-term remote work visa is not issued until you arrive in Iceland. Once you enter Iceland you must contact the Iceland Directorate of Immigration and they will issue a visa for you. The validity period of the remote worker visa is calculated from the issuance date.

High income requirements: if we look to the income requirement it’s the highest in all digital nomad visas. Individuals need $7.700 monthly income.

Couples need $10.000 Income to apply for this visa. This visa is not for average digital nomad. Even good digital nomads also can’t apply for it.

Only a very small percent of high class digital nomads can apply for this visa.

If we look to these criteria we can say that most digital nomads aren’t allowed to apply for Iceland digital nomad visa.

And it is not worth to apply for Iceland digital nomad visa with these requirements, if you are planing to apply with your girlfriend or wife you need to have $10K income per month which is not fair.
